Coronavirus, paroles de chercheur.

Not terribly exciting, I admit, but I wanted to share. As with most molecular genetics work its essentially pippetting fluids into other fluids, mixing stuffs and heating and cooling stuffs. Not shown is the RNA extraction that came before (also on robot). After this setup step the 384 plate goes into a QuantStudio machine for qPCR (real-time PCR). Then analysis, and send the results for a final look over by directors and sign-off. We're aiming for 72 hours turnaround. I started working in diagnostics a few months ago (from research), and I can't say I really like it, but at least I'm slaying the overtime hours while the rest of the economy goes off the cliff :-/ I wasn't freaked out about SARS CoV-2 before but I sure am now. Wear your masks and protect our old people! Health authorities are not being forthright about the need for respirators, I suppose because they're worried about a shortage for front line workers and causing more panic. And ok, all those plates at the end are not patient samples, it was test development and validation. But we're planning to be running over 700 tests per day in my city soon. Incidentally the chick I work with has been coughing non stop for the last 3 days...Sigh. Doesn't she know that is no longer socially permissible?
